I got a blood clot behind the knee after the knee op . I prescibed rivaroxaban 15 mgs twice a day for3 weeks , but now switched to 20 mgs once per day. I am feeling worse as time goes by ..lifeless....i am worried rivaroxaban is damaging kidneys making me feel worse. But perhaps it is the 4000 gms/day of paracetomol i take for pain for last 3 weeks that is making me feel worse ?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
thanks again for sending the question.

Rivaroxaban has not generally been a medication which is known to contribute to worsening kidney function. We do need to use caution when using this medication in patients who have moderate or severe kidney dysfunction. In your case however you have early stage chronic kidney disease and your kidney function is adequate in order for you to tolerate the therapeutic dose of his medication at 20 mg once daily.

I would not consider using a lower dose of this medication for you as it would not likely be optimally therapeutic. Most likely your doctors will ask you to stay on this medication for about three months.

As for why you were not feeling very well this could be related to a number of different possibilities. taking excessive doses of Tylenol can put you at risk for developing liver dysfunction - at 4000 mg daily you are at the daily limit and would certainly not want to take any more than this dosage in a 24 hour.

it might be reasonable for your doctors to consider running some lab tests to check your blood count, electrolytes, kidney and liver function to see if there is any other explanation for why you are not feeling well.

try to stay optimistic. As you recover from your operation and from the blood clot I anticipate that within the next 2 to 3 months you should start to feel progressively better. please try to maintain adequate hydration, eat a well-balanced diet and try to exercise as best you can.

Sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
