Suggest Medical Tests To Rule Out Pancreatic Problem

Question: How does one diagnose a pancreatic problem?
Brief Answer:
By measurement of pancreatic enzymes in blood
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
Pancreas is an organ that secretes digestive juices that help in digestion of fats, proteins and carbohydrates with help of lipase, protease and amylase respectively. Incidentally, the pancreas (like rest of body) is made of proteins. So, sometimes, in case the pancreatic ducts leak, the juices autodigest the pancreas and release the enzymes into the blood stream. Hence in case of pancreatic problems the blood levels of lipase and amylase are found to be sky high. Presence of these enzymes helps in diagnosing pancreatic problems.
Hope that I have been able to clear your doubts.

When we would have a doctor schedule a blood draw, which test(s) and code numbers would we request for high numbers for lipase and amylase? We appreciate your response and experience.
Brief Answer:
Lipase and amylase
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I do not know why you are apprehensive about your pancreas. Pancreatitis is characterized by severe abdominal pain. In case pancreatitis is suspected, the blood is to be tested for lipase and amylase levels. If the levels are already found to be high, you need not do further testing.
