Suggest Medication For Malaria Prevention

Posted on Tue, 21 Feb 2017
Question: yes please. I came home from XXXXXXX this past saturday, the 28th. I have been taking Atovaq/Proguan 250/100 tabs. I have, in principle, to take these tabs until next saturday, feb 4th. My grandniece had a baby born on New Years Day. I do not know if I would be putting him at risk if I hold him next sunday feb 5th. I do not think I was exposed to malaria in the places I was in (Banglalore, Cochin and Allepey) but i am not sure. Would I be putting the baby at any risk this sunday on feb. 5th? Also, does this pill contain a live virus. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
The drug you are taking is for malaria prevention

Detailed Answer:
Hi welcome to HealthcareMagic,

The drug you are taking is for malaria prevention and even if you were exposed to the infection you would not have got it.
So it is safe to hold the baby.
The drug is a chemical and does not contain any live virus since it is not a vaccine.

Hope this clears your doubts.

I had also mentioned to you taking vivotif for anti -typhoid less than a week before I left for XXXXXXX on January 10th which I know is a live virus.
I did not see the baby before I left for XXXXXXX because I did not want to put him or his mother at risk. I would like to be reassured about vivotif as well because I dug as much as I could to see how long it might be live. I appreciate your response.
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
yes Vivotif is anti typhoid oral vaciine that contains live attenuated bact

Detailed Answer:
Hi yes Vivotif is anti typhoid oral vaciine that contains live attenuated bacteria.

Attenuated means its efficacy is reduced so that it cannot cause infection but only bring about immunity.

Rarely it can cause a mild form of typhoid.

However typhoid can only be transmitted through stools --contaminated hands, water, food.

As long as you wash your hands thoroughly and don't kiss the baby, even the remote possibility that you are worried about cannot happen.

So go ahead and enjoy holding the baby on the fifth without any worries.
