Posted on Tue, 5 Jan 2016
Question: Hi, I am due to have breast surgery soon, lumpectomy and auxiliary node op, I underwent a hysterectomy in May, before my surgery I was given pre medication to help relieve my extreme anxiety - and it worked! My surgeon is aware of my extreme anxiety but said that as this is usually done as day surgery it is not available to me on this occasion. Is there anything I can safetly take before this to reduce my fear and not interfere with my anasthetic? I really need something as I am terrified. Thank you

Brief Answer:
Continue diazepam as prescribed by your GP.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.
Read and understood your history and concerns. I can very well understand the anxiety you must be going through.
Whether a day-care or longer you could have been prescribed the premedication, you could have insisted for it.
Diazepan is a very good anxiolytic and please continue the dosages as prescribed by your GP and it should help you and yet not interfere with your anesthetic.
Try to relax as much as possible, this is a day-care surgery.
Everything will be fine.

My oncologist has suggested that I have an auxillary node operation at the same time as my lumpectomy she stated that 1 in 5 people suffer from Lymphidema after this procedure - I am not sure if I could cope with this - what are the usual outcomes from this surgery in respect of pain and mobility etc - my oncologist has an excellent reputation but I am still concerned about the outcome in terms of pain manageability etc Thank you

As previously mentioned I have a lumpectomy and auxillary node op upcoming- I am anxious about the after effects of node surgery- is it painful and life changing? I have heard that in the USA it's not always done and the survival rates are similar? I am not keen on having this procedure but my oncologist is in favour of this -I am just concerned of the outcome and repercussions of this surgery

I have a pending surgery that I am extremley anxious about. In May I had a total hysterectomy and prior to this surgery was give a sedative to help alleviate my extreme anxiety- it worked! I have asked my breast surgeon if I could have something for this procedure (different surgeon) and she said it was not possible due to bring done as day surgery but I am still extremely anxious and was wondering if there is anything I can take prior to this to help me that will not interfere with my surgery? I was fine last time and there must be something I can have to help with this extreme anxiety? Thank you

Brief Answer:
As discussed

Detailed Answer:
Read your additional information's and concerns.
If this is a day-care please ask your surgeon whether this is a sampling surgery, if so no edema or pain will occur.
If there is a total clearance then only there are chances of edema to that side of upper limb. Pain is minimal with clean surgery and timely intake of painkillers help.
Your Surgeon is reputed means there will be a great surgery. Your anxiety gives more pain perception and if you decide to go ahead with brave heart, believe me - the pain will be minimal and easily tolerable.
Yes, the survival rates are similar, but the decision solely depend upon your and your Surgeon's discussion and decision.
Take the anxiety medicines.
Insist for one.
I hope these answer your queries.
