Suggest Remedies For Linear Lucency In Navicular Bone

Posted on Wed, 28 Sep 2016
Question: HI! I was told I have linear lucency through the mid portion of the navicular bone on 8/29/16. Told possible fracture. (My foot started hurting a week and half prior, but heard a loud crack when trying to stand up off the floor in foot. ). DR put me in a knee high boot. Looking online, wondering if I should be in a cast? Have been icing it a lot as it is still painful. (If I do too much. Icing does help.). Also have pain along ankle up the leg which wasn't there at dr appt. Cast or boot? Weight bearing or non?

Brief Answer:
Boot with no weight bearing.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

The presence of liner lucency is suggestive of a fracture. If there is no displacement then even a boot can help you. It is better to keep the foot elevated on two pillows while resting to decrease the swelling. You need to remain non weight bearing till the pain and swelling subsides.

To decrease the pain in addition to Icing you can take a mild pain killer (eg. Tab PARACETAMOL 650 mg Twice to thrice daily after food for the next 3-4 days) . If you can't remain non weight bearing then it is best to consult an Orthopedician and get a cast to provide proper rest to the area.

I hope this answers your query.

Dear DR XXXXXXX Tayal,
Thank you for your reply. I have very little swelling at this time. Minimal pain with rest. Increased with activity. Helped w ice. Radiologist stated couldn't r/o displacement. How would I know if it was displaced? Radiologist also suggested further studies would be needed depending on s/s. Primary said I can ride the stationary bike. The info I keep reading keeps contradicting ? What do you suggest? Thank you.
