Suggest Remedies For Nasal Congestion In An Infant
My newborn girl is 18 days old and she has developed blocked nose with some chest congestion. When she finds it difficult to breathe due to blocked nose that results in coughing. She has to apply so much of force while coughing. It's been four days that I took her to a paediatric who said she has some chest congestion and gave three medicines- betnesol, augpan and asthakind. It's a five day course. He also prescribed nasivion nasal drops. She is accepting breast feed with also little difficulty as her nose remains blocked. Will my little one recover from this cold? I am extremely worried.
Do not worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. These are common complaints in newborn period. The only measures required for such symptoms are the following:
1. Use nasivion saline drops every 2-4 hours along with nasal aspirators if the secretions are copious. Baby nasal aspirators are available in baby stores and online.
2. Use room humidifier when the baby is sleeping.
3. If the problem still persists, then use hypertonic saline nebulization (2 ml every 4-6 hours) for decongestion of chest.
4. Avoid unnecessary medications. Betnesol, augpen and asthakind are not recommended for these symptoms in newborn age. So, avoid them from now.
5. Keep a watch on respiratory rates, chest wall retractions and nasal flaring. If the rates are persistently more than 60/min, or less but associated with retractions and nasal flaring inspire of drops and aspirations, then go for a chest X Ray and neonatologist clinical check up.
6. Ensure regular and exclusive breastfeeding.
Most newborns improve with regular nasivion saline drops in 1-2 months.
Hopefully it will be of help. I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care
