Question: I have sciatic type pain in my left leg associated with a BM all down the leg and have difficulty getting rid of the stool. Your symptoms are suggestive of lesion of nerve roots in segments L5,S1-S3 since nerves for rectal sphincter control are located in this area. So first step would be to do MRI scan of lumbar and sacral spine. Other causes include rectal polyps or sphincter atonia and test called anal manometry may be useful to determine exact cause of your problems which can be then treated accordingly.
