Brief Answer:
A thorough investigation is required to rule out cause of palpitation

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Firstly thanks for selecting health care magic to ask your query !

Some of the common causes of palpitation in young female are-

1)Strong emotional responses, such as stress or anxiety-Extra-cardiac stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system (inappropriate stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, particularly the vagus nerve (which innervates the heart), can be caused by anxiety and stress due to acute or chronic elevations in glucocorticoids and catecholamines hormones .

2)Over use of nicotine and caffeine.

3)Overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism)

4)An abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia)- Arrhythmias may include very fast heart rates (tachycardia), unusually slow heart rates (bradycardia) or an irregular heart rhythm.
Common abnormal heart rhythms are-
ectopic beat, premature atrial contraction, junctional escape beat, premature ventricular contraction, atrial fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, ventricular tachycardia, ventricular fibrillation, heart block.

5)Palpitation may be associated with electrolyte imbalances of magnesium, potassium and other salts in serum.

6)Gastrointestinal distress such as bloating or indigestion, along with muscular imbalances and poor posture, can also irritate the vagus nerve causing palpitations)
Above mentioned reasons can be a cause of palpitation with light headedness in your case.

Yes you should definitely be concerned about it, a thorough investigation should be done to rule out the exact cause of palpitation in your case.

I would prescibe you following tests
1) Thyroid profile- to rule out hyperthyroidism.
2)24 hour holter monitoring- will record the ECG continuously during a 24-hour or 48-hour period. If palpitation occurs during this period it will be recorded in ECG recording and we can rule out the cardiac rhythm at the time. For this type of monitoring to be helpful, palpitation must be occurring at least once a day. If they are less frequent(you have not mentioned frequency of palpitations) the chances of detecting anything with continuous 24, or even 48-hour monitoring, are substantially lowered. More recent technology such as the LOOP recorder allows continuous recording for up to 7 days. This is a very important and basic test for someone who presents with palpitation as main symptom. It will rule out the possibility of arrhythmia's which are the most dangerous cause of palpitations and can be some times fatal also.

3) Serum electrolytes - a disturbance in serum electrolytes can cause palpitations , they can be corrected easily.

If you are a smoker give up smoking.
Don't take alcohol in excess.
Try to do 45 minutes of exercise daily.
If you are anxious person with elevated anxiety levels cardiologist will prescribe you with benzodiazepene to lower your anxiety.
Don't eat oily ,fatty and spicy food for some days.
Add fibres to your diet.

The above mentioned investigations are the basic test which can be helpful in finding out the cause of palpitations.
As prevention is always better then cure, i would suggest you to take the problem seriously.

In case you need more details or have any other query ,feel free to ask , i would be happy to help you!

Brief Answer:
start benzo diazepenes +SSRI's + life style modification

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As suspected by me your anxiety levels are on higher side, increased anxiety level as told by me earlier overstimulates the vagus nerve ,which supplies the heart and causes tachycardia.
Anxiety also increases the production of adrenaline and catecholamines which again causes tachycardia and palpitations.

When palpitations are caused by anxiety posture of the patient doesn't matters.

I would suggest you to consult a neurologist or psychiatrist for increase anxiety levels ,They will keep you on Benzodiazepine like clonazepam or alprazoram for few weeks, may also consider to add SSRI along with benzodiazepines.

SSRI's assist the brain in maintaining enough supply of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which lessens the anxiety levels.

You can discuss the medications with your psychiatrist or neurologist.
Apart from the medicines try lifestyle modification,

Do regular exercises.
You can try YOGA courses. Meditation is very helpful in overcoming anxiety.
Don't overthink about palpitation, it will increase anxiety levels in subconscious mind.
Eat light food ,avoid over spicy ,fatty fast food.
Minimum 8 hours of sleep daily is a must.

But a 24 hour holter monitor should still be done to rule out any possibility of arrhythmia.

Don't panic just start the medicines along with life style modification.
You will start feeling much better in few weeks.
