Hello,
You have history of slight
hyperthyroidism and you are not taking any medicines for it. Presently, you are experiencing two equal sized red bumps at the back of both right and left calves. It has now become red, it hurts but there is no pus. Hyperthyroid states can cause nodules varying in size, these are called
pretibial myxedema and occur due to increased
hyaluronic acid in the skin. They look like
erythema nodosum. You are suggested to get clinically examined and get repeat T3, T4 and TSH done, you will be accordingly treated.
Other medical condition that can cause such symptoms are
panniculitis, erythema nodosum. the commonest form of panniculitis. You should get throat bacterial culture (anti-
streptolysin O titre for Group A
Streptococcus) and chest X-ray done. In the meantime, avoid too much exposure in the sun, avoid wearing tight clothes as it may irritate the skin. Give rest to your legs, elevation and compression may relieve symptoms.
Taking anti inflammatory medicines, one stat when required is helpful. Take care of your hygiene, keep skin clean. Do not try to remove or pop it, doing this may lead to an infection or cause the lump to get bigger. You will be given conservative treatment or venous compression therapy if needed depending on the severity of the symptoms and pathology detected.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
