Suggest Remedies To Control Hyper Activity In A Child
Question: My 18-month-old son is very active. He climbs stairs, climbs sofas, crawls at jet speed, cruises along the furniture, stands up unsupported. Only thing he DOES NOT do is walk unsupported. This is worrying me to death. Other children of his age are walking. What do I do???
Brief Answer:
Do not worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi
I understand your concerns but don't worry. Most kids do start walking without support by 18 months of age but sometimes we do have exceptions in normal kids who take a few more months. Your child seems to be doing well as such.
I would like to know a few things to suggest the best management plan for him:
- He was a term or preterm baby?
- his birth weight and current weight and length
- Is he able to interact well ( language, hearing and social milestones)
- Any associated illness at present and in the past.
- His feeding habits, vitamin and mineral supplements
Waiting for your reply.
Take care

Dear Doctor
Thanks for the assurance!!!
My son was born in 35th week of my pregnancy (c-sec). His birth weight was 2.4 kg and now he weighs around 11.5 kg. I am not sure of his length. He understands us well like if we ask him to get the ball, he responds well. He says amma, akka (for his elder sister). He tries to copy his sister in almost everything (singing, scribbling etc). He has not suffered from any major illness...only the usual season-related flu, cold...He eats well..He eats dal rice, curd rice, bread, idli...At present he is not on any vitamin/mineral supplement
Regards

Brief Answer:
Check him for Rickets
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for the reply. Your child seems to be fine. As he was born premature so we may wait for one more month. In case he do not start walking without support thereafter, check him for rickets by S. Calcium, Alkaline Phosphatase, 25(OH) D3, X Ray knee joint and Intact PTH. You may upload the reports for my review.
Rickets is a common cause of such delays in otherwise normally growing children. If present, it can be easily treated by supplements.
Hopefully it will be of help.
Take care
