Posted on Fri, 6 Feb 2015
Question: Hi,
I have a problem with moustache growth. The amount of growth is not in proportion to the beard and it decrease from the edges to the centre of nose. I have tried to shave and also not shave for quite a long time to see if the waiting period helps. But unlikely the growth is really small and it looks awkward not having a thick moustache compared to your beard.

Brief Answer:
Better to rule out alopecia areata

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to healthcare magic.

I understand from your query that you are having reduced hair growth only over your mustache area.

This could be normal in some people. However, it is better to rule out a condition called as alopecia areata.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the hairs are destroyed and present as small patches of baldness in scalp, beard and / or mustache areas.

Hi doctor
As u have suggested I have send a picture to the above mentioned email. And I would also like to bring out the fact that the present condition in picture is in the stage where in I have trimmed it and as the beard grows more the growth of the moustache is very feeble.

And I strongly believe it is not a case of alopecia areata.

I believe you will look into the matter and help me

Brief Answer:
It appears normal

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for the picture.

It does not appear to be alopecia areata.

It seems to be normal. In some people, the hair growth varies and the central portion of the upper lip may have reduced growth.

If you are cosmetically concerned, you can use a lotion containing Peptides or 0.03% Bimatoprost twice a day for 3 - 4 months. These are actually being used for better growth of eyelashes and eyebrows, but you can try on the mustache area also.

You can discuss with a dermatologist and get them prescribed as these are prescription medicines.

Hope this helps you.

Warm regards,
Dr. Johny Chacko

Thank you for the answer doctor.
As I would like to ask you whether the same lotion can be applied over the present state of moustache or it has to be a clean shave ?

Brief Answer:
You can apply on the mustache

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

You can apply on the existing mustache.

You need not shave it to apply the medication. Please make sure that it touches the skin and not just the hair.
