Question: I have had an estauschian ear infection for over 2 months. Have taken Prednisone, Fluticasone, and two rounds of Amoxicillin and nothing has touched it. Last week the ENT suctioned out lots of stuff from both ears and then put in tubes. They drained for about 2 days and then plugged up also. I am so frustrated. I can hardly hear and need my hearing for mmy job.

Brief Answer:
Glue Ear. Anti-allergic mucolytic, steam inhalation, ear drops.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. Fluid trapped in the middle ear increases mucus production which thickens with time to a glue like consistency.

2. Add an anti-allergic (such as cetirizine/ fexofenadine/ loratidine) , mucolytic (such as ambroxol/ bromhexine) and steam inhalation. Ciprofloxacin ear drops and further cleaning of the ear and gently cleaning the ventilation tubes (grommets) under a microscope is recommended.

3. Inform the doctor who put in the tubes. Check if the fluid was sent for bacterial (and fungal) culture and antibiotic sensitivity. The nose and paranasal sinuses should be checked. A Tympanometry (Impedance Audiometry) should be done or repeated. It will show if the Eustachian Tube is functioning properly.

4. Upload the results of the examination and investigations for further treatment options.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
