Brief Answer:
Some suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for using Healthcare Magic. Treatment for a hiatus hernis is only necessary if it is causing problems. Most people only experience problems if the hernia causes gastro-esophageal reflux. This can cause heartburn and an unpleasant taste in your mouth.
In the first instance, some life-style changes can help. Eating smaller and more frequent meals rather than three meals a day can help. Avoid lying flat for three hours after eating a meal. Avoid drinking during the night. There may be certain foods that trigger symptoms in your diet and these should be removed. Avoid alcohol, caffeinne, chocolate, fatty foods, spicy foods, and acidic foods or drinks if they make your symptoms worse. Avoid bending over immediately after eating of drinking. Elevating the head of your bed by about 20cm may help. if you are over weight, losing weight may reduce the frequency and severity of problems. Smoking can irritate the digestive system and cause you problems.
Medication may be considered. Antacids can relieve the symptoms and may be liquid or tablets. They work by neutralising the stomach acid.
H2 receptor blockers may be tried. These include ranitidine and cimetidine. Some of these are available over the counter from your pharmacy.
Proton pump inhibitors or PPIs reduce the amount of acid produced by your stomach and include omeprazole and lansoprazole. These would need to be prescribed.
I hope this is of help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards,
