Suggest Remedy For Pain In Knee Post Injury

default
Posted on Fri, 6 Nov 2015
Question: I was pulled hard by a large dog (0n a leash), and twisted my knee. I can't put any weight on it, and must use crutches. Pain of the knee while standing is excruciating, and much less when sitting.

What did I do to my knee and what should I do to get it to heal?

Brief Answer:
you might have any ligament injury. do not bear weight on it

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understood your query mam. At age of 69, ligaments and tendons are not as strong as in young and are more likely to get injured.
As per your history due to sudden jerk and movement there might have been ligamental injury either slight tear or inflammation.
In either conditions there will be pain at joint.
Now as it is painful to bear weight on the knee it will be best to avoid as much as standing unless necessary so as to avoid straining the ligament and giving it rest.
In most instances giving good rest to ligament and taking proper anti inflammatory medicines help faster recovery of these injuries.
MRI is the choice of investigation to look for the injured ligament and the degree of injury.
Depending on the diagnosis treatment can vary from simple rest as i mentioned above to arthroscopic ligamental repair. It will be decided after MRI only which is after 2 weeks for you.
Till then avoid weight bearing as much as possible. Avoid exercise of knee joint so as not to aggravate pain and injury. Application of ice if swelling is there will provide relief. Anti inflammatory medication like ibuprofen or paracetamol will give pain relief also. As you have been given steroid injection it will also act to reduce inflammation at local level.
Do not apply any heat to that part. Use crutches as you already are for preventing weight bearing.
I hope it will be minor and gets healed with proper rest and medicines.
I hope i have answered your query well. if you have any more query kindly write back to me will be happy to answer them.
Thank you
