Suggest Remedy For Post Nasal Drip And Sinus Discomfort

default
Posted on Mon, 25 May 2015
Question: For years , my wife has suffered with a springtime post nasal drip/upset stomach, sinus discomfort,
fatigue , itchy eyes /nose which all disappear with the onset of hot summer weather.
Despite my belief that these are symptoms of a tree pollen allergy, the several allergists' tests came
up negative. Last year, an allergist administered a shot of Celestone, saying that if she was
allergic to anything, the shot woud alleviate the problem for about 6 weeks. That didn't work!

Does anything occur to you that would help her?

Brief Answer:
She is having seasonal rhinitis.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your wife's situation and problem.
Her symptoms are suggestive of rhinitis and association with season (springtime) makes the diagnosis of seasonal rhinitis more.
It is not allergic reaction.
It is inflammatory reaction due to weather in springtime.
Some individuals are highly sensitive and reactive to this kind of seasonal change.
And they are absolutely normal, once season is over.
So possibility of seasonal rhinitis is more in her case.
My suggestion is to start nasal spray contains fluticasone (steroid) and combination of anti histamine and anti allergic drug, 1 month prior to springtime and continue 1 month post springtime.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wishing good health to your wife.
Thanks.

Dear Dr, Bhavsar,

Thanks for your prompt response. I appreciate that you have a specialty
which corresponds to the condition.

I am searching the Internet for a description of "seasonal non-allergic rhinitis",
but can only find either "allergic rhinitis" or "year-around non-allergic rhinitis".

She is presently self-medicatiing with both "Nasacort" corticosteroid spray
and "Sine-Off" anti-histamine pills.

Is the "Nasacort" equivalent to the "Flonase" (containing fluticasone corticosteroid), or is it advisable that she switch? Thanks, Ed

Brief Answer:
Better to start fluticasone.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
Nasacort is having triamcinolone.
Flonase is having fluticasone. Fluticasone is more potent and effective than triamcinolone.
And it is considered as drug of choice for rhinitis.
And better to start fexofenadine instead of sine - off.
Fexofenadine is non sedative antihistamine.
And good for rhinitis.
So better to start fluticasone and fexofenadine instead of triamcinolone and sine-off.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.
