Suggest Treatment For Constant Runny Nose

default
Posted on Sat, 25 Jul 2015
Question: I have frequent running nose, ever since I shifted to Bengaluru. (8yrs) this condition mostly occurs when there is cloudy weather. I have visited couple of doctors, including ENT specialist, and the diagnosis was Dust allergy. however, I am still not convinced as to why I will not have this problem during January to May. This occurs only during rainy and winter season. the running nose is so much that I need an entire box of paper napkin sometimes
. anti histamines like citrizine give great relief.i use Telekast L if my condition is unbearable. I had also used Flo mist spray for almost fr a year on a doctor's advice.

currently I take Telekast L occasionally, may be 5 to 6 tablets for entire year.

please suggest me some permanent remedy

I am also curious as to why my condition worsens when there is cloudy weather ..

Brief Answer:
You are having seasonal rhinitis.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
By your history and description, possibility of seasonal rhinitis is more.
You are having symptoms only during rainy and winter seasons.
In rainy season, humidity is high. So respiratory viruses cultivate well. Same is true in winters.
This is the reason why cold and cough are common in rainy and winter season.
Same thing is true in your case.
You are having recurrent viral infection which is causing inflammation.
At the same time you are also allergic to dust. So this causes more severe rhinitis.
So my suggestion for you
1. Take annual Influenza vaccine. It will prevent recurrent viral infection.
2. Start nasal spray 15 days prior to rainy season and continue till winter ends.
3. Also start telekast L 15 days prior to rainy season and continue till winter ends.
You need too suppress the inflammation to avoid symptoms. And all these are preventive measures.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Yes, nasal spray is safe for long term use.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your follow up question on Health Care Magic.
Nasal spray containing inhaled corticosteroid is the treatment of choice for seasonal allergic rhinitis.
It is very safe for long term use. In fact atleast 6-8 months treatment is needed to suppress allergic inflammation. Keep away from decongestant sprays. Decongestants should be used only for short duration not more than 5 days. Ask your pharmacist if you are unable to differentiate it.
Telekast L contains montelukast and levocetrizine.
Montelukast is anti allergic. Levocetrizine is antihistamine. Levocetrizine can cause sedation and drowsiness in some patients. So better to replace it with fexofenadine. It is non sedative antihistamine with higher efficiency than levocetrizine. And combination with montelukast is available. Telekast F is the name.
You can start telekast F instead of telekast L.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
