Suggest Remedy For Swollen Foliate Papillae
Question: Hi, I have swollen foliate papillae (right side only) with very tine dot on it from atleast 2 months. I got this validated by ENT two times. I didn't get the definite answer from him. Dentist said nothing.
Brief Answer:
Medication, dental check followed by biopsy.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query.
1. From the image, the area looks congested (red) and inflamed (glossitis).
2. I recommend a course of medication for a week (including an antibiotic, multivitamins , a local gel), a dental check up for any repetitive injury to that area and a biopsy if this persists.
3. This should be the line of action. Upload the progress report and any biopsy report if performed.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.
Regards. .

I had 2 ENT visits in the past 2 months which he did endoscopy and said this doesn't look like any thing suspicious. When I asked for biopsy, ENT told me that he would send for biopsy only he feel suspicious NOT I asked for. I had B12 deficiency for which I received 3 shots. Oral surgeon said he would not know until he biopsied it which he looked with naked eye. I have another appointment with ENT again in December 2nd week. Do you recommend the biopsy for everything that doesn't go away in 2 months?
Brief Answer:
Yes, the biopsy can be done.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Normal healing time for superficial tissue is a week or two.
2. You can go ahead with a biopsy. It will settle the diagnosis.
3. By mid December, it would be over four months. If you defer the biopsy, definitely get it done if this persists.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Thank you for your reply. Is this called swollen foliate papillae? I have the similar one on my left side also but smaller. Is this true that the foliate papillae swells due to some virus/bacteria from dust/pollen/pet dander? I got into a new home which had pets (Both cat and dog) in May. The home was locked for 6 weeks while we were on vacation and since after I come back I feel I am breathing dust and I am planning to replace the carpet with some wooden floor. I sneeze and cough when I am there in the home but ENT couldn't see anything when he checked with endoscopy.
Brief Answer:
It is a larger area. Get the biopsy done if this persists.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. Most of the causes that you have listed will cause some pain and other symptoms. They will also not be restricted to one area.
2. This is a larger area than a few foliate papillae.
3. Get the biopsy done if this persists. Any lesion that does not heal in a few weeks should be biopsied if it does not resolve with treatment.
I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Thank you so much your answer. That makes me to get a second opinion from head and neck specialist and I am planning to get an appointment as soon as possible.
Brief Answer:
There is no cause for worry.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for writing back.
1. That is a good decision.
2. There is no cause for worry ax most of these lesions are benign. However correct diagnosis makes treatment easier. It is always safer to have a quick simple biopsy and settle thd matter.
3. Wishing you good health.
