Suggest Remedy For Swollen Knee And Leg Along With Calf Pain

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Mar 2015
Question: I have had calf pain for about 3 years now. It was result of a weight lifting injury. I have had a nerve test done, emt? Maybe. It was negative. About 2 months ago my leg swelled up below the knee and was swollen for about 2 weeks. I am a pilot and my doctor advised me to get a DVT test done by ultrasound. The test came back negative along with my blood work. My leg is no longer swollen but I have two lumps in my leg. They both started around my calf and one moved down to the end of my foot and the other is slowly moving up my leg. It went from my knee to my thigh last night. Right leg only, 28 yo male, no meds, smoker. Any thoughts would be great. I'm just afraid it is truly a blood clot.

Brief Answer:
Definitely not a blood clot!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this swelling and all the inconveniences this has caused you. Honestly, this has nothing to do with a blood clot. The symptoms are not the least suggestive of a clot. a clot would cause pain, swelling and redness. A clot that lasts this long would have caused signs of tissue death and you are not there. For the lumps to move in opposite direction is very atypical. Finally, deep venous thromboses cannot be seen moving on the surface of the leg.

My advice is to let go this thought of a possible clot. This is not the case. Your profession increases the risk of clots. Make sure you always stretch on flights so as to avoid blood stagnation and possibility of clot formation. STOP SMOKING!!! This would be a great way to reduce damaging your blood vessels, heart, lungs, etc. Healthy diet, regular exercise, fruits and vegetables would greatly improve your health. Also, avoid excess salts in food.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.

Thanks for the quick response! They are painful when touched and the one in my thigh feels like a tight muscle (painful when stretched or when i crouch). They are not warn to touch but are definitely tender. Do you have any idea what they are if they arent blood clots? Just a little nervous that one is moving up my leg. And it also isnt as defined as it was at my knee. I could see and feel a bump there, now its just a deeper soreness that feels swollen. Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
Would need more information about this!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

The symptoms clearly do not represent a clot. However, to establish the cause would require at least a proper examination and some testing that I cannot do online. I will suggest that you follow up with your doctor.

At this time, I recommend monitoring. I really think there is nothing alarming that needs immediate medical care. Monitoring would permit us to gather more information and certainly make the right decisions if there is something at a latter date. Right now, we would be everywhere and no where.

At your age, clots are not common either.

I wish you well and always available for further input if requested.
