Question: Hello Doctor,
My wife is having occasional thigh muscle spasms (1-2 times in a month) since last 6 months. That usually occur in the evening/ night and do not last till next day. This may sound silly, but is there is specialty that specializes in this type of problem? We are going to get an X-ray but just wanted to do a quick check. Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Lumbar spine problem, Electrolyte deficiency

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Does she have any tingling or numbness at the sides of the thigh ?

Any low back pain that radiates to the thighs ?

Does she have Diabetes ?

Does she have increased pain on bending forwards or lifting heavy weights ?

Has she delivered children by normal vaginal d delivery and has the pain occurred since then ?

According to the history you have provided, it is possible she may be having muscle spasms due to possible Electrolyte imbalance like reduced calcium and Vitamin D, reduced Magnesium or Potassium. Also possible is nerve compression at the lower back in the spine due to slip disc or degenerative changes.

I would advise you to get a lumbosacral spine Xray, get treated fire Serum vitamin D, Serum Magnesium and Potassium.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Drink plenty of water. Exercise daily by brisk walking.

Kindly answer my queries for me to be in a better position to help you.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Hello Dr. XXXXXXX

Thanks indeed for your prompt response. Please see below the details:

Does she have any tingling or numbness at the sides of the thigh ? No.

Any low back pain that radiates to the thighs ? She usually has complaint of lower back pain. Although not always, but many times, leg pain and back pain occur simultaneously.

Does she have Diabetes ? No.

Does she have increased pain on bending forwards or lifting heavy weights ? No. The pain occurs only sporadically and suddenly.

Has she delivered children by normal vaginal d delivery and has the pain occurred since then ? She did normal delivery. Back pain complaint was there even before delivery however, about an year ago, she had slipped on a wet floor. Only after that the leg pain had started. There was swelling for a week but then pain and swelling both subsided. However, sporadic pain started afterwards (usually 1-2 times a month).

Thanks,
xxxx

Brief Answer:
Pain killer, hot water bag, Multivitamin tablet with Magnesium

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

It is possible she may be having muscle damage or knee joint arthritis especially if she had pain in the knee. It would be advisable to get an Xray of the painful joint.

For now, she can apply hot water bag to the painful region. Take pain killers. Take Multivitamin tablets with Magnesium in them. She needs to do daily brisk walking exercise after a prost warm up session which is very good in counteracting spasms.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
