Question: I went skydiving with my son 8 weeks ago. It was a tandem, free fall adventure. My ears have not been the same since. I think it certain that I torn the ear drum of the right ear. At that time, I learned to not let it get infected otherwise there was little to do. After 8 weeks I am getting nervous about it. Both of my ears seem different

Brief Answer:
Ear Barotrauma.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. This would represent barotauma to the ear.

2. A simple ear drum examination will settle the diagnosis.

3. Hearing tests including a Pure Tone Audiogram (PTA) and an Impedance Audiogram (I/A) should be done.

4. Upload the results for further treatment options.

5. A traumatic perforation, if it has happened, should heal in 8 weeks as long as there is no infection.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.

These last 10 days or so I have had a ringing in my right ear. This is the one that I pretty certain was torn. Does this concern you or, is this a normal part of the healing process?

Brief Answer:
Yes tinnitus is common but unpredictable.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for writing back.

1. Yes, Tinnitus (ringing sound) is common with barotaruma and usually is due to a hearing loss.

2. It may arise with or without an ear drum perforation. Hence the ear examination and hearing tests are important.

3. It may disappear on healing or persist even after healing.

I hope that I have answered your query. If you have any more questions I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
