Suggest The Ideal Dosage For Venlafaxine Taken For Insomnia?

default
Posted on Tue, 22 Mar 2016
Question: What type of sleeping aid can be safely used with a 37.5 mg dose of Venlafaxine ER? A 50 mg dose of Diphenhydramine has not provided positive results. Increase the dosage? My wife is seeing her doctor on Friday, but was hoping to get a head start. Her biggest issue is getting a sufficient amount of sleep. We believe she has a severe case of SAD. Same thing happened last year and went away in March. This condition reappeared two weeks ago. She was on Zoloft and it did not work.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

I would try melatonin 3mg. This is an over the counter drug that is highly effective for sleep. You can increase to as high as 10mg a night until it is effective. I would not increase the Benadryl dose as side effects predominate at higher doses without substantial benefit.

Thanks. We have some here and will try it. Our local clinic is operated by the Mayo Clinic and the wait time to see a Psychiatrist is 8 weeks.
