Question: my nephew has very bad adhd and is suffering because he can't get his medication (methylphenidate) because his family can't afford health insurance.I am very worried about him.this poor baby just can't get through the day without some kind of an out burst.do you know any one who would or could help this little guy that is suffering so much everyday. he now lives in XXXXXXX but his old doctor was XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX ,XXXX. he was taking 20 mg.his primary doctor was XXXX. my nephew is XXXXXXX XXXX his father is XXXXXXX XXXX (YYYYY castle dr. Good morning. My name is Dr. Saghafi and I am a neurologist. So sorry your nephew is experiencing these difficulties. Unfortunately, on this network of physicians there is no ability for anyone to prescribe medications and especially the type of medication you are referring to for ADHD since those are controlled substances and they are watched carefully by the Drug Enforcement Agency as to how they are prescribed by doctors and dispensed by the pharmacy.
The only way to obtain that type of controlled substance in the US is to be seen and examined by a licensed physician who has a DEA number and is in good standing with the Medical Board.
My recommendation for the parents (if they cannot afford health care) is to consider one of several options:
1. Your nephew is likely able to be considered by the state as disabled. If the parents go down to the Dept of State Welfare or Dept of Jobs and Family Services they will help fill out paperwork so that your nephew can solicit a medical card (assuming XXXXXXX still retains a public aid system: some states have given up offering aid programs due to their expense.
2. Search the County Hospitals around your area since they all have some form of indigent program available and your nephew can be rated or ranked as not having insurance or the resources to pay for insurance. This then, gives the patient XXXXXXX to access medical care as well as prescriptions when needed.
3. Call CMSS (1-800-MEDICARE) and solicit an application to be filled out for what is known as SSI. This is serviced by MEDICARE paperwork.
4. You can also look up whether or not the nearest large city close to where you live may have a FREE CLINIC...many large cities do and patients without insurance can go there for free checkups, labs, some diagnostic tests, AND MEDICATIONS.
5. Finally you can look up the ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER Association
(www.add.org/) and they may have information on doctors who treat ADD in your area. They may keep a list of physicians that you can utilize as well.
