Question: Hi,
I am a male with aspergers syndrome and OCD. I have a girlfriend and I don't like it when she calls me things such as a baby, child, horrible, nasty or horid even if it is just a joke.
I now ended up in an argument when me and my girlfriend were playing because she called me a baby and I asked her multiple times if she really thought I was.
She also said earlier on in the day that I was always moaning at her and then she told me she was joking and I asked her again if she really thinks and she told me she doesn't and was only joking. I then said be honest and she told me that i do a little bit or something like that. So I then asked her not to lie just always be honest.

Is this to do with my aspergers or am I a manipulator or pshycologicly abusive

Brief Answer:
these symptoms are part of OCD

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

You are asking same thing again and again to check/clarify about your doubt what your girlfriend says. This is typical symptom of OCD.

It is good that she is responding every time. You should be treated with medicines and psychotherapy for this.

OCD and Obsessions and compulsions are both common in adults with high-functioning ASD.
Treatment of OCD includes both medicines and psychotherapy.

In psychotherapy I prefer cognitive behavior therapy(CBT).In mild cases only CBT is sufficient. In moderate to severe cases initially medicines and then CBT is added. And later on medicines stopped gradually.

In medicines SSRI group of drugs(fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine) are main stay of the treatment. They are required in higher doses than that for depression.

Benzodiazepine group of drugs(clonazeapm, lorazepam or etizolam) are used initially for short duration for fast symptomatic relief.

- Let me know which medicines are you taking and since when and what dose?

Hope I have answered your query, I will be happy to help further.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.

I am on sertraline anti depressants for my OCD.

I am also wondering weather or not when she calls me a baby, child, horrible, nasty or horid even if it is just a joke. If I am being too sensitive. I get a lot more sensitive with her about this stuff than I would if it was someone else.

Also when I got into the argument yesterday it got to the point where I ended up covering my ears because it was getting too much. She said I was being childish and having a tantrum or something. I was just over whelmed.

I know I can be extreme and even be crazy-like when I get sensitive and I do end up repeating myself and asking her to promiss she didn't mean anything by it and other things. I can imagine it being fustrating and she is the person I'm like this with the most. Also if she taps me as a joke or pushing my face in any way I really do not like that and I can't tell if this is because of any condition or if I am being abusive or something or over sensitive for what ever reason.

Brief Answer:
couple counseling can help

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for follow up.

I can understand your feelings. You are aware about your situation that you are making her angry because of some problem.

Actually by saying words like baby or child she expresses her love. Due to your problem you cannot understand or misunderstands her expressions and asks her to clarify. Due to this constant and repetitive asking she (naturally any person) becomes irritable and conflict happens. Ultimately in anger she may become abusive to you. This may lead to many disturbances in your relationship.

Through CBT you need to learn meaning of her expressions and try to control your asking/clarifying behavior.
The best way is taking her also with you for counseling if you feel that she should be aware about your problem. Even without informing her you can control your behavior gradually with psychotherapy.

Sertraline should be used up to 200 mg dose in case of OCD.

I hope you will have control on your behavior and your relationship progresses. well.

Take care.
