Suggest Treatment For A Torn Medial Meniscus
Question: Hi, I have a torn medial meniscus, had an MRI, saw a surgeon, and already have surgery scheduled for next wed. I just had an appointment with a doctor about PRP and a torn meniscus, I am trying to get any real info about if this will work for a torn meniscus. Most info comes from clinics that perform this, so I feel there comments are based on selling you there way. I want a comment form someone who is not benefiting money wise.
Brief Answer:

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome
I appreciate your concern
Arthroscopic repair is correctly indicated for the meniscal tear. It is done in order to repair and save as much of the meniscus as possible.
Complete meniscectomy is avoided as it can lead to late development of degenerative arthritis.
Wishing you best of health
Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
Platelet rich plasma (PRP), contains a portion of patient's own blood having platelet concentration above baseline, to facilitate healing of the torn meniscus. Theoretically, its a viable option. However, trials regarding osteoarthritis didn't show encouraging results nor has it demonstrated a significant reduction in the need for arthroscopy or menisectomy.
