Suggest Treatment For Abdominal Pain Due To Kidney Stone

Question: I have been diagnosed as having a 3mm kidney stone lodged in the ureter. My doctor has prescribed Ibuprofen, paracetamol, codeine and Tamsulosein Hydrochloride. The pain goes when I take the painkillers but comes back when the effect wears off. What can i do to dissolve the stone. i am drinking large amounts of water.

Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for your query,based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have a stone of a size of 3mm in Ureter and have pain in abdomen which gets relieved after taking pain killers. I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem. 1) Have you done ultrasound scanning of abdomen? 2) Where is the site of stone in ureter ? 3) Are there any back pressure changes (Hydronephrosis)in kidney and ureter proximal to the site of impaction of stone reported in USG scanning report? 4)Do you have vomiting ,fever ? I shall be able to make precise comments after getting feedback from you. In the mean while continue taking drugs prescribed by your Dr, Please note that there is no medicine that will dissolve the stone. Since it is a small stone it is likely to pass down through ureter in due course of time. I have had a scan. The stone seems to be in the bottom left of my abdomen. I have been feeling slightly dizzy and have vomited recently, three hours after eating. Is it the medication causing the vomiting? If it is the Tamsulosin hydrochloride causing the vomiting ( it is noted as a side-effect on the leaflet in the packaging) should I stop taking it, or carry on in the hope that it will deal with the stone?

Brief Answer: Vomiting is not due to Tomsulosin. Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for feedback. Vomiting that you have is due to reflex secondary to pain .You have not mentioned any thing about the degree of hydronephrosis in your reply. Anyway stone seems to be in lower 1/3 of ureter and is likely to pass down . Continue taking Tomsulosin along with pain killers. Ensure to drink more water so that your kidneys will produce more urine that will help in moving the stone down into bladder, Thanks and Regards. Dr.Patil.

Brief Answer: It is dilatation of ureter and proximal to stone, Detailed Answer: Hello Thanks for follow up.Hydronephrosis is dilatation of Ureter and pelvi calyceal system proximal to the site of impaction of stone that develops due to obstruction to the flow of urine from kidney into bladder.
