Suggest Treatment For Acute Ankle Pain

Question: Hello,
Two months ago I woke up in the morning to acute ankle pain. Hard to walk. Have been seeing a doctor, who is new to me. I finally got an X-ray. Nothing showed up. Then a tiny red dot showed. Went back to the doctor. Now it's a 4inch area of reddens. He prescribed antibiotics, and thought it was an infection. Redness still present. After five days. Hum

Brief Answer:
infection unlikely if going on for 2 months
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
If it is going on for 2 months and it is painful to walk, most likely something is going on in the joints or ligaments/soft tissues around the joints. If that progresses, skin redness can be there.
Soft tissue injury doesn't show up in xrays. Bone problems do, but not always. So I would recommend an orthopedic consult and possibly a MRI as well.
Also high uric acid and gout can cause these problems. So a blood panel with uric acid may be required.
Hope this helps.

Thank you. I also wondered about gout. I am going to see a doctor whom I feel I can trust on Monday. He is not a primary care doctor, he owns a clinic. He's a "good guy."
I'm wondering if I should continue the antibiotics until then. Frankly, I think they are not the issue. I'm wondering about the redness on my skin, and the pain can be intense. Although I have been walking more. Just want to know what "it" is, so that I can walk without fear of further injury.
I also have HS, an autoimmune "thing." Frustrating.
Thank you again. This internet doctor connection is amazing.
