Suggest Treatment For Allergic Rhinitis

Question: Hi Dr. XXXXXXX
I have two questions:
1. I have allergic rhinitis. Sept - XXXXXXX is the worst period for me where my nose is stuffed, severe itchy eyes, watery eyes, itchy throat & cannot breath comfortably. I am on maintenance course of Budemate 200Micro grams (Formoterol Fumarate +Budesonide). Pls advice if there are any long term side effects due to these drugs like throat cancer & if there is any permanent cure for me ?

2. Does Dehumidifier or Humidifier help in reducing the symptoms ? As my problems are very less during summer season

Note earlier I was on Seroflo (Seroflo 250 Inhaler Salmeterol and Fluticasone) which did not help me much, but with Budemate the symtoms are relatively less.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for your query.

1. You have a Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis (SAR) which worsens the asthma. A nasal steroid spray and an anti-histamine plus an anti-leukotriene (such as montelukast) will help.

2. The Inhalers have many common side effects which are mild, and a few long term side effects, however cancer is not one of them.

3. Throat cancer is rare and even if it develops, early diagnosis and treatment gives a very good cure rate today.

4. If a change in humidity affects your symptoms, get a plain CT PNS (Para Nasal Sinuses) Scan done pre- and post- decongestion with OTC Otrivin nasal drops. After the first plain scan is done, use 5-8 drops of Ortivin on both sides and re-scan after 15 minutes. Upload the comparative images here. They will also reveal if you have any nasal obstruction preventing you from doing Pranayama.

5. We can take this discussion forwards thereafter.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any follow up queries, I will be available to answer them.

Regards.
