Suggest Treatment For Arthritis In An Elderly Person

Question: Hello, I am a 65 year young person. about 2 years ago I fell and twisted my ankle badly, I went to emergency and it was not broken but badly injured. He told me to see my doctor the next day. Well, I had no insurance and the only dr I was seeing was my arthritis dr. I had an appointment with him already for the next day. When I went he said he was not a primary care dr and just waived it off. The emergency dr had been concerned about the ligaments behind my heel and thought I might need surgery. I only had a stabilizer on for about a week and it took forever to heal. But for about the last 6 months my heel hurts terrible when I bend my foot. The back of my heel gets real sharp pains. I am too busy to have to stop walking! My pc dr quit her practice in November so I have to find a new one. Do you think that it it way to late to repair my ankle? And what kind of dr should I see?

Thank you kindly sir,
Karimich

Brief Answer:
Orthopaedic surgeon.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

From symptoms you are explaining it seems your supporting ligaments of ankle are tear.

Its like chronic sprain of ankle joint.

Tear of ligaments may be partial or near complete.

For exact diagnosis to be made you need to have MRI scan of ankle joint.

In my opinion, you should not delay visiting specialist doctor.

You should visit orthopedic surgeon, he will do your physical examination and act accordingly, and may advise surgery.

Before surgery doctor may also advise you to have intra articular steroid injection, some times it cures pain.

Till then apply hot packs.

Try to avoid prolong standing.

Painkillers you already know.

Always wear ankle binder.

I hope it helps.

Thanks,
