Question: I am 55yrs. old has had Asthma for over 15 yrs.and now I have COPD. Have taken Advair (Diskus 500/50) for preventive for over 10yrs. even though I knew the medicine was bad for my osteoporosis. Last week when I went in for a physical, I was concerned to find out that I lost 1" of my height for the first time (my menstruation stopped last year). My mother became hunches back I am very concerned. What is other alternative do you suggest?

Brief Answer:
Life style changes and consult endocrinololist

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

From your description above it`s apparent that for asthma control you are taking advair and you have osteoporosis.

Inhaled steroids are the best option for control of asthma and have very little side effects since they act directly on airways.

Of course very long term use can have side effects and can aggravate osteoporosis.

But I would like to mention here that there are many other reasons for osteoporosis most important being sedentary life style and lack of exercise. Smoking and diet deficient in calcium may also affect the bone density. Lack of exposure to sun causes vit D deficiency which impairs calcium and other mineral absoption.

Menopause also causes/aggravates osteoporosis because of deficient female hormones.

Since you have to take advair for control of asthma, I suggest you focus on other aspect as mentioned above and try to improve your bone health. Pl consult an endocrinologist who can put you on some long term treatment for osteoporosis.

If asthma is well control, you may try tapering advair but pl try it under supervision of your pulmonologist

Thank you for your previous answer Dr. Another question I have is, What is other alternatives to Advair (diskus 500/50) because my insurance wouldn't cover it and it is too expensive(400.00), specially now I have been unemployed for a 2yrs.going thru my retirement acct. Thank you very much in advance,
