Suggest Treatment For Bad Odor From Nostrils And Mouth

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Sep 2014
Question: My 2year old son has a funky ugly odor coming from his nostrils or mouth I guess. Starting this winter he's been having colds with runny sticky heavy booger nose. Been on antibiotics thrice. Every time I take him to the doc he's checked and ruled out as common colds and once ear infection. At nights he can end up being very congested and stuffy with heavy breathing and still docs say its a cold. I'm not sure anymore if the funky smell is from his nose or mouth any more. Coz we keep brushing his teeth good and his teeth look healthy. Help coz I love kissing my baby a lot.

Brief Answer:
could be allergic rhinitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
If your son is having persistent cold and stuffy nose, it could be allergic rhinitis.
I usually prescribe monteleukast granules 4mg once a day in the evening initially to see if it works.
Nasal sprays may be required if not settling after a month on monteleukast.
You need to consult your nearby pediatric allergist to get a nasal endoscopy done to confirm the diagnosis.
Wishing him speedy recovery.

Regards

Dr Arun
