Suggest Treatment For Bipolar Disorder While On Trileptal
Question: Can someone who has done well on Trileptal for a number of years for bipolar disorder have the medication begin to cause speech problems and balance problems? She also has difficulty keeping her head up. She has no psychosis like mania or depression but rather stumbles with her speech, balance, and posture.

With advancement of age there is decreased capacity of liver and kidney to excrete medications from body resulting in accumulation and toxicity.
I am giving this detail because I feel she is having high levels of trileptal which is causing balance and speech issues.
For the remedy it is not essential to stop the medication burt decreasing the dose in most patients which such problem is enough.
I mean to say that trileptal can cause balance and sleep problems even after years of use when body finds difficult to eliminate the right amount of drug leading to accumulation and side effects.

Thank you Dr. XXXXXXX I have just one follow up question. Would her blood levels necessarily show her levels to be high. In other words could she still be having adverse effects even though her levels was near normal?

But practically speaking it is possible to have toxic effects, despite normal levels on laboratory tedting.)
This is my practical experience with some patients but I feel that despite normal blood levels lowering of dose should help the patient.
