Hi,

Medications for schizophrenia and OCD are typically prescribed to manage symptoms and improve quality of life. While these medications can be effective, they may also cause side effects, including weight gain. Weight gain can be a concern, as it can lead to other health issues like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.

It is important to discuss any concerns about medication side effects with your son's doctor. They can guide whether it is safe to reduce the dosage of medication or stop taking any medications. Abruptly stopping medication can be dangerous, and it is important to work with a healthcare professional to develop a plan for tapering off medication if appropriate.

In some cases, alternative medications may be available that have fewer side effects. Lifestyle changes, such as a healthy diet and exercise, may also help manage weight gain associated with medication. Ultimately, the decision to change medication or dosage should be made in consultation with a healthcare professional who is familiar with your son's specific medical history and needs.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
