Suggest Treatment For Bowel Incontinence And Constant Headaches

Question: A year ago my husband, age 88, was prescribed narcotics for severe butt pain due to spinal stenosis. Three weeks ago he was hospitalized as his kidneys were not able to eliminate the drug, resulting in overdose. He was in hospital a week. While there he had a bacterial infection, not C-diff. Due to that and detoxing, his stool became partly solid, partly liquid. He has been a care center for rehab for two weeks and will be discharged one week from today. Night before last he was up 5 times with totally liquid stool which he could not contain. (He has had occasional bowel incontinence before.) Last night he only had 3 eliminations, and they were partly solid. He also has moderate constant headaches, being treated with Tylenol. He cannot use n-saids due to a previous bleeding problem. Do you have any suggestions for diagnosis and Treatment? You may email me as I will be out of wi-fi range. Thank you. XXXXXXX XXXX
Brief Answer:
I think your husband's diarrhea is due to loss of healthy gut flora
Detailed Answer:
Hi, welcome to HCM,
I think your husband's diarrhea is due to loss of healthy gut bacteria due to the antibiotics. A course of pro-biotics should help him along with Zinc supplements.
Please restrict his Tylenol use as he can develop renal damage--especially at this age. Headache is very often due to acidity--try antacid drugs for the headache. If it works, it is a safer option.
