Question: My 70 yr old mother is experiencing bowel leakage without having sensation she has to go to the bathroom. She is type 2 diabetic and takes med for hypothyroid. Otherwise in good health. What could be causing this very distressing situation?
Brief Answer:
diabetic neuropathy
Detailed Answer:
hello dear, welcome to HCM forum.
This is likely to be a manifestation of diabetic neuropathy, which is a very common complication of long term diabetes.
Stool continence is controlled by muscles innervated both by autonomic and somatic nerves. Diabetes can affect both type of nerves resulting in bladder and bowel problems.
Treatment need a combined approach with strict diabetes control, vitamins supplements, physiotherapy (pelvic muscle exercise) and opinion from a surgical gastroenterologist.
Your doctor will guide you through these steps.
Hope I have answered your question.
Wishing for good health.
Thank you.
