Suggest Treatment For Breakthrough Bleeding While Having UTI

Posted on Mon, 18 Sep 2017
Question: I am 59 yo and have been struggling with a UTI for over 2 weeks. 2 rounds of antibiotics have not worked, and now I'm having some breakthrough bleeding from my vagina. Can the two things be related, or do I have two separate issues going on?

Hello
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Has a urine culture and. sensitivity been done?
Are you menopausal?
Spotting and urinary infection both could point towards atrophic vaginitis, which needs local hormonal therapy.
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Take care

I doubt that my PC did a culture and sensitivity. I see him again tomorrow so I will ask.

I had a uterine ablation procedure (cauterization) in 2003 and have not had any periods since then. I can not say exactly when menopause began for me because of that. I was on hormone replacement therapy for several years prior to moving to California in 2012. My PC here took me off of HRT in 2013. I had a pap smear this summer and my GYN prescribed estrogen vaginal cream which I have used occassionally when I remember to do it! So your response sounds very reasonable.

Thank you so much.
So my two cues seem to be on track.
This could be because you forget the estrogen vaginal cream, or a UTI treated with the wrong antibiotics, simply because a culture and sensitivity test was not done.
