Question : My son has chronic belching problems triggered weather changes. The problem we have identified as a supra gastric belch deriving from the throat he has not formal diagnosis. This issue goes away at night but comes back in the morning. Bit is debilitating enough that we have registered him in school as 504 plan and misses 30 days of school a year. The condition was onset August 2013 after a week of feeling poorly do to allergies. When exercising he has the problem and has to suppress the problem and as he describes he has pressure in his chest. He is currently on several meds Wellbutrin 200 mg, Flovent inhaler x 2, xyzal5 mg, aderol, metforman. He has been refused by mayo clinic. Went to UCLA for pulmonology, he has all the blood work done and has had an endoscopy and neurologist All test showed normal. Scanned copies of all his medical records are available.

                                    Brief Answer:
Vocal Cord dysfunction needs to be considered
Detailed Answer:
Hi...I have gone through your son's record and symptoms and all the attachments in detail.
I feel that this could be a vocal cord dysfunction and strongly feel that there is a psychological component attached to it.
The other possibilities I could suggest would be -
1. Gastroesohageal reflux disorder
2. Bronchial asthma (A possibility).

Given your response, we agree with a psychological component, but how do we address the other issues and with whom.
The pressure pain and symptoms are real and are triggered not by a mental lapse but an environmental trigger.
Thank you

                                    Brief Answer:
I agree with you - discuss with a pulmonologist
Detailed Answer:
Hi...VCD (Vocal Cord Dysfunction) has got both allergy triggers and psychological component.
I suggest you consult your pulmonologist. Perhaps his current treating doctor can provide a referral. In my opinion, he requires -
1. A good pulmonary function testing (to be repeated).
2. A direct or video laryngoscopy.
3. Bronchoscopy to rule out other congenital airway anomalies.
