Suggest Treatment For Chronic Belching With Normal Ultrasound And Endoscopy
Question: 2 months ago I developed chronic belching to the degree where I could feel the gas build up in my esophagus, and at times leaving me with a choking sensation.
The GP said it was Gerd and prescribed me with Nexium and Zantac. These medications have made no difference to the symptoms.
I have had blood tests, X-Rays, Ultrasound and endoscopy. No abnormalities were noted.
The only thing I have noticed is that it is worse if I consume carbohydrates (gluten free makes no difference).
If I consume high protein foods only, it drastically reduces.
I thought it may be some form of bacteria but since I am mostly belching, no bacteria can live in stomach apart from H Pylori (which I tested negative for).
I am totally clueless as to what could be causing all this gas in my upper digestive system.

Brief Answer:
malabsorption tests advised
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.
Belching is a common symptom for GERD. However, as you are reporting to have your symptoms aggravated while eating carbohydrates, then this is suggestive for possible :
- malabsorption of carbs
- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth
Malabsorption tests advise like fecal tests and measuring digestive enzymes.
Hope it was of help!

Hello Dr Klerida,
Thank you for your reply. So it is possible for gas in the small intestines to go upwards (belching) rather than downwards (flatulence)? Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,
Yes, sometimes, gas can go upwards (belching) rather than downwards (flatulence).
This is especially true if you:
- eat fast
- consume drinks/foods that would increase gas, thus, leading to stomach distension and belching
- lay down immediately after eating
Hope it was of help!
