Suggest Treatment For Chronic Cough

default
Posted on Thu, 4 Jun 2015
Question: I have been dealing with a severe chronic cough for 8 years. I have been diagnosed with bronchiectasis, asthma exacerbated by allergies, bronchitis. I have taken antibiotics, steroids and been hospitalized 6 times where they increase the dosages for 3 days and send me home still coughing. Someone just told me about rocephrin (sp?) injections. Two people swear by them. Before I mention it to my primary physician or my pulmonologist, can you tell me anything about them? I am 82 years old. I manufacture phlegm; use a nebulizer every day with albuterol/ipratropium.

Brief Answer:
Antibiotics help only temporarily

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I am Dr Mittal
I have read your query
Rocephrin is basically an antibiotic called ceftriaxone.
It is used during the infective stage of the disease.
Unfortunately, i dont think its going to help you.
Lungs in your case are compromised and prone to repeated infections
and spells of breathlessness.
The only thing you can do is meet your pulmonologist and consider use of BiPAP.
This may help you.
Its a breathing device and is very useful in supporting the lung functions.
You will have to use it during the rest phases, like in sleep.
I hope that the information helps.
Best of luck,
Dr Mittal
