Suggest Treatment For Chronic Migraines

Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: my girlfriend has been having serious chronic migraines and nothing will even effect it
the doctors and hospitals we have gone to have done nothing.
the migraine IV solution did nothing but knock her out
is there anything we can do to get testing done to figure out what is causing this issue and why nothing not even hydros and oxy work on her if anything those meds and others make her head worse.
I want to figure out why this is going on but the doctors refuse to do any sort of testing
does anyone have any recommendations

Brief Answer:
Migraines

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It sounds, from your description, like your friend's migraines are quite severe. She should definitely have evaluation for her headaches. An MRI or MRA (a type of MRI that looks at blood vessels) of the brain would be appropriate. She needs to see a neurologist for evaluation.

What has been done so far? Has she gone in to the ER during a bad migraine and have they seen that the treatment didn't help? Has she seen a neurologist? What explanation has been given to her for not pursuing this further?

we have a neurologist he has given her imetrix and Topamax(forgive me if they are the same) I'm not the best with meds neither of them made any difference
in fact they made her worse
she had a bad reaction to them
the er acted like she was faking and it was a inconvenience to help us because we have basic state medical they refused to do any testing of any sort
her neurologist was notified she had a reaction to the meds and took her off but has not put her on new meds

About the neurologist

Detailed Answer:
The neurologist may be not wanting to try another medication until he sees her for her next appointment. Does she have a follow up with him soon?

Brief Answer:
Navigating the system

Detailed Answer:
A couple of thoughts on navigating the system:

1. You can call the current neurologist's office and ask for a call back from his nurse. Then discuss what has transpired so far and the current situation and ask if she thinks the neurologist will be planning to do any imaging studies and what you should do next as the migraines are not controlled with any of the meds tried. If you feel that the plan is unsatisfactory, then:

2. Make an appt. with a different neurologist, and have your girlfriend sign a release to get records from the previous neurologist.

The problem with making an appt with a second neurologist is that it would be a new consult rather than a follow up appointment, and sometimes it can take a long time to get an initial appt. with a new doctor. This is because most don't have a lot of large chunks of time in their schedule (for new consults) - most of the day are smaller blocks of time for follow ups. So if you do decide to see someone new, get on that right away.

Sometimes you have to be very persistent if a doctor is unsatisfactory and keep looking for someone who will take care of the problem.

I hope this information helps in some way. It may be a matter of persistence. I'm really sorry it has been a struggle so far.
