Suggest Treatment For Cold And Sore Throat

default
Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: My son can't afford to go to the urgent care. We have no insurance.
He is 23, 6"2", and about 200lb.
He is in very good physical shape. He recently had a bad cold and now he has swollen tonsils, especially on the right side. He says it hurts to swallow. He does not seem to have a fever, but we do not have a thermometer here. Other than the his throat he feels fine.
He needs antibiotics , I believe.
Can you guys help him?

Brief Answer:
You can avoid antibiotics initially.

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thank you for asking HCM.

I have gone through your query. As your son had cold and then sore throat it should be a viral infection. Bacterial infection can come secondarily. But most sore throats don't need antibiotics.

You can do home treatments like gargling with warm saline. You can also buy miramistin solution for gargling also.

Take lemon tea with honey. Warm chicken soup also will be helpful. You can also take chewable vitamin C.

Ibuprofen (motrin) can be taken for pain and discomfort.
If there is no improvement with above measures then antibiotics will be needed. In such case i usually suggest antibiotics like azithromycin empirically.

Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear.
Thanks.
