When we suffer from cold, it is usually caused due to certain viral infections. It generally does not show up in a routine blood test. Antibiotics are ineffective in the treatment of viral infections. Irrespective of the use of antibiotics, such infections may last for 5-10 days. It generally has an alllergic component and antiallergic like cetiriazine can be given for a few days. It also takes care of runny nose. If fever is present, it needs to be controlled by the use of crocin or paracetamol and tepid sponging. Giving steam inhalation or use of humidifiers should be helpful by helping in diluting the cough. I would not suggest any other medication.

Steam inhalation works very well to relieve dry cough. When the respiratory secretions become dry, we call it dry cough. The solution is to hydrate the cough. Steam or water vapour is helpful in this respect.
But if there is shortness of breath, as you mention, you need to visit a doctor and get yourself assessed without delay. You might need nebulisation and intravenous medications.
