Suggest Treatment For Cold, Cough And Chest Congestion In An Infant

Question: Hi doctor
My daughter is six months old n has been prescribed tuspel plus syrup 1.5ml thrice a day along with maxtra drops 0.4 ml thrice a day for her cold cough n congestion.. SHe has thrown up twice n is facing difficulty in sleeping.. Pls advice if it's safe to take these drops n sryup

Can understand your concerns.

Tuspel plus Syrup contains bromhexine and terbutaline which acts as cough suppressant, this is not given in small babies.

Maxtra drops contains phenylephrine and chlorpheniramine which is also cough suppressant, maxtra is the drug of choice for cough and cold in small babies.

I suggest you to stop tuspel plus Syrup.

If child has difficulty in sleeping then the child should be examined by a pediatrician so that we may not miss any important finding.

Pediatrician has only prescribed tuspel plus syrup as only maxtra wasn't helping.. Pls suggest an alternative medicine or remedy

Maxtra drops is a good medicine for cold and cough in small babies.

There is no need to change maxtra as all cough drops have similar composition.

If child is not responding then antibiotic needs to be changed and we need to see what additional complaint the child have like fever, wheezing.

In my opinion, you should get the child examined once again by doctor to look for wheezing in child and to change the antibiotics.

Check up has been done today itself, there is wheezing n hence these drops.. She is unable to vomit n remove cough properly.. It's getting stuck in the chest..

If you have shown today then you should continue medicines for 24 hours.

If there is wheezing after 24 hours then nebulisation should be given in addition to medicines.
