Suggest Treatment For Cold Urticaria

Question: My daughter was recently diagnosed with Cold Urticaria. She is 13 and refuses to cover up her face. Everytime she goes outside she gets red spots on her face almost immediately. Before being diagnosed she would break out into raised hives, almost looked like mosquito bites. Since she has been taking Reactine the seem to be red spots. Is there a difference between hives and welts. The red spots are for the most part not raised. The don't bother her, in fact she doesn't even know the are there. She can touch and drink cold things with no problem. My question is can something bad happen to her when she breaks out on her face? Should I worry? Although I made arrangements with the school to keep her in for recess and she carries an epipen, she refuses to stay indoors. Can she have a severe reaction when she breaks out on her face?

Brief Answer:
Involvement of the respiratory tracts.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thanks for writing to us.

Any form of urticaria can have a progressed reaction involving the respiratory tracts. Usually its a rare phenomenon.

So the guardians, the care givers should be trained to know this condition- typically the subject complains of shortness of breath, a heavy breathing and an audible wheeze, this should alert you and the doctor has to see the child immediately.
Even the child should be educated about this.

Thank you, her allergist did go through the signs with us. Basically what I'm asking is do I need to run to the doctor or ER as soon as I see hives? Are the hives dangerous, or are they just an annoyance? Her Immunologist stated that in most cases having a severe reaction would more then likely be caused by full body exposure.
I am just worried about her breaking out? Everytime I see the red spots I panic, and think she will have a severe reaction. Should I panic when she comes home with these reactions? Normally the go away within 30 minutes.
She has seasonal allergies, plants, trees, weeds, also dust mites, cats, and mold.

Brief Answer:
ER only required in case of respiratory signs

Detailed Answer:
Hi,,thanks for writing to us. Every time she gets a hive , you do have to see for the respiratory distress signs as explained earlier, if you find them you ll have to rush to the ER. Usually the hives will subside with oral citrizine based prepartions. So you have to discuss with your doctor and request him to prescribe emergency medicine to be kept at home and may be use them if required. In the absence of respiratory symptoms, I think you will be able to manage with those emergency medicines.

Hope I have cleared your query, thank you regards.
