Suggest Treatment For Complex Tear Of Medial Meniscus

Question: I am 54 years old, 6'1" tall and weigh 290 lbs. I am very active, I farm, work in a steel factory, ride a bike, hunt, some minor construction/remodel work. I have messed up my right knee, Complex tear of medial meniscus, high grade tear of the ACL and Arthiritus. My local Doctor wants to use orthoscopic suergery to remove part of the Meniscus and do nothing with the ACL. I am worried that not repairing the ACL will limit what I can do in the future. Missing farm/construction work is not a problem this time of the year and I am salary at the steel plant so I get 6 months full pay and 60% pay for a addtional 6 months if need be. I can limit what I do at the steel plant to just desk work if I need too. I will attach my MRI report. Should I get the ACL repaired?

Brief Answer:
The decision to repair ACL or not is clinical

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for posting
I have gone through your query and understand your concern. The decision to reconstruct a injured ACL ligament is purely based on the sign and symptoms the patient have and not alone on MRI finding.
The measure symptoms are knee instability, difficulty in climbing down stairs and brisk walking?
Do you have any of these symptoms?
Meanwhile you may continue with the knee muscle strengthening exercises and pain killer (ibuprofen) on as and when required.
Looking forward to your reply.
Take care

I have to take 1 step at a time on stairs and I have to watch how I walk - It feels like my knee is wobbly and separates when i lift my leg. When walking on uneven surfaces I have to be extremely carefull to step evenly or it feels like my knee will pop out of place. It swells and is extremely painful when it does happen and for several days afterward. Will this stop if the doctor repairs the Medial Meniscus? or is it the ACL?

Brief Answer:
I strongly believe you need ACL reconstruction

Detailed Answer:
Hello
It's good to see you
I have gone through your reply carefully and the symptoms are suggestive of ACL insufficiency /tear and you need ACL reconstruction . These symptoms will not go away with meniscus surgery alone.
I would recommend a review by another doctor in your city.
Hope this answers your query.
Regards
