Detailed Answer:
Hello Madam,
Thanks for writing in to us at hcm.
This is Dr.Riyanka and I am glad to be helping you with your query.
Hole in the heart means congenital heart defects when there are malformations in the the heart's normal structure which is present that at birth. These defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart.
The heart has 4 chambers separated by an inner wall called the septum. The right side of the heart receives oxygen-poor blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs. The left side of the heart receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs and pumps it to the body.A hole in the septum between the heart's two upper chambers (Atria) is called an atrial septal defect (ASD) and a hole between the heart's two lower chambers(Ventricles) is called a ventricular septal defect (VSD).
Usually small septal defects close up in due course of time.
The children who have septal heart defects like Atrial Septal Defect can live a normal life till adulthood but if the hole is big it may require surgical intervention.
Those with large ventricular septal defect show signs of heart failure at 2 months and require surgical intervention.
Difficulty in breast feeding and stunted growth suggest severity of the disease.
I suggest you can consult a paediatric cardiologist or a cardiothoracic surgeon .
Nowadays there are different treatment methods to correct septal defects like:
1. Catheter procedures
2. Surgical closure of defect
Kindly donot worry as the prognosis after correction of the defect is excellent nowadays and children lead a very normal life after treatment.
Hope this answers your query.
