Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
At his 13th birthday my Son began tx for acne 2 tabs daily at 30mg each for 6 months. It is now 8 months after his birthday. He has nearly stopped growing about 1/4 in 8 months. He has always been in the 75th percentile range and we are very concerned as he is now 5 5 . We are very concerned that the stunted growth may be caused by the meds. What do you think
It is less likely that acne medication is the cause of stunted growth. In boys, growth occurs in spurts. Most of them witness growth spurts between the age of 12 to 15 years. In some, the growth is slightly delayed and occurs up to the age of 17 years. The best way to conclude possible stunted growth is to consult a pediatrician who will look for physiological markers of growth compared with the average percentile for the age group. In addition, X-ray of wrist helps in further determining the possibility of stunted growth.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Ayesha Shareef, General & Family Physician
