Suggest Treatment For Constant Sneezing In The Morning
Allergies, sinusitis, dryness, sudden change in temperature & brightness
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
The sneeze reflex is caused by some allergen or irritant in the nasal mucosa, sinuses, eyes, or throat.
Allergies to dust, pollen and irritation due to dryness of the upper respiratory tract /sinuses, secretions, sudden change in temperatures or even sudden exposure to bright light can trigger a sneezing fit that is suppressed in sleep.
Would you please clarify a few things for me?
1)how long has he had these sneezing fits for? How long does it last for? What is his usual morning routine? (before the sneezing starts)
2)did he any recent cold/ sinusitis/lung infection ? Is he on any medications? Does he still have any phlegm, mucus in his nose/sinuses/chest?
3)any history of allergies?
4)do you leave windows open during the day or at night.
5)any fragrance or incense sticks used in the room where he sleeps? Any new detergent or personal care product being used by him
6)does he sleep in an air conditioned room?
7)any other symptoms like itchy /watery eyes, itchy throat?
I would get a detailed medical history and look for any signs of infection or inflammation due to allergies.
Based on what I find and the answers to the above questions I would suggest a treatment plan.
Suggestions
: please keep room air moist (use a humidifier). If already using one, make sure it is cleaned regularly.
:cover his bed and power with a sheet when not in use and change linen every week.
:if any new detergent or personal care product is being used, try switching to the old one
:if any lingering infection or secretions present, do steam Inhalations with saline nasal sprays to clear them out. Do this 3 times a day and once be before bed.
:Time the air conditioning to switch off or increas. The temperature an hour before his usual waking time. Clean the filters and vents.
:keep windows covered with a dark shade of cloth and change these frequently as well
:check for any sources of mold in his room. Check for bed bugs as well.
All these are meant to remove/prevent the irritant/allergen
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Allergies most likely
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the follow up.
It does sound like his nose and sinuses are getting inflamed during the night.
Possible culprits are like those suggested in my previous reply.
I advice you to try those measures consistently for at least 3weeks.
If he sleeps under a ceiling fan or near a pedestal fan, keep it Away and reduce speed.
If he snores in his sleep, a deviated nasal septum or a polyp should be ruled out.
I believe it is most likely an allergic cause. I had a 20 yr man who came to me with these sneezing fits about a couple of years ago.
He did have dust allergies and slept in an air-conditioned room.
Initially I put him on antihistamines for a few days. He made some changes to his bedroom and symptoms gradually improved.
He still has some mild sneezing when he travels. I advised him to take Homeopathy treatment prior and during travel. Its been a little over a year and he is doing fine.
I would advice you to make the changes and try the remedies I suggested.
If it doesn't make any difference in 2 weeks, I recommend seeing an ENT (Ear nose throat) doctor to rule out structural causes for the problem.
Antihistamines provide temporary relief but have the disadvantage of making the mucosa dry.
Hope this helps and I've answered your queries. Please be patient and Consistent. I believe in preventive measures rather that treating just the symptoms.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.
