Question: My Wife has had constipation for several days now. She has taken laxatives and prune juice to no avail,
She has stomach pains and has vomited this evening,
Brief Answer:
vomiting is due to constipation
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing to XXXXXXX This is Dr. Ashish Verma, a general surgeon, answering to your query.
If the constipation is for many day and now it is causing vomiting.... then you should now take her to the hospital emergency room as she may be having intestinal obstruction... so an erect abdominal x-ray will be needed to diagnose it...also there she can be given enema to help make the impacted stools soft and a ryles tube aspiration to decompress the stomach to prevent vomiting and distension...
Is she passing flatus or not? Coz if passing, its subacute obstruction and can be managed conservatively, if not passing, then its complete obstruction and may require surgery depending upon the reports and response to conservative management.
Hope that i have answered to all your queries. If you have further queries, i will be glad to answer them.
Regards,
Dr. Ashish Verma
