Suggest Treatment For Constipation
matter no matter what she has tried. Some the things she has tried are: laxatives, high fiber bars, prune juice, small enemas, bely massage, glycin suppository. She drinks tons of water.I.m afraid it might be a bowel obstruction. What should she do?
Too early to think so, though possible
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks for the query,
There are other signs that should be considered first. It is important to know if she eats well as usual or not. Also, If she has abdominal pain, a distended abdomen, has not been able to produce gas through the anus (flatus), or has vomited, we can think of an intestinal obstruction. If these are absent, it might be early to be afraid it could be an intestinal obstruction. Constipation on its own could cause this.
I suggest more and more laxatives, may be with higher recommended doses and higher quantities of water and fibre be tried for a couple of days.
A digital rectal exam could be important to check if it is simple some hard stool that has impacted into the rectum and is preventing stool from coming out or not.
A plain film of the abdomen, and a colonoscopy might be needed in case the above measures prove unproductive. A Barium enema/wash at a later stage can be used to detect any obstruction if present and at the same time usually acts as treatment.
The opinion of your doctor, after a carefully medical review and physical examination could be helpful.
Kind regards,
DR Bain
