Suggest Treatment For Constipation
He had a massive stoke in September. He can only say a few words and only takes
a few steps with the help of a caregiver. He is not incontinent but can not get to the
bathroom so they have him in diapers. His Bowel Movements are sometimes easy and
very hard at other times. He is on stool softener, Miralax, etc but we are not sure how
often he has a BM. They are giving him an enema once a week to be certain he gets
cleaned out.He truly hates those enemas but they have convinced me they are needed. What is your advice?
Be patient , maintain regular CT brain and lab checkups and physiotherapy and psychotherapy are of important value in his progress .
Detailed Answer:
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using HealthcareMagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..
I hope your husbands gets better soon , from your given history you mentioned that he have aphasia ( difficulty to speak ) , difficulty to walk alone this seems like left cerebral stroke .
In such cases the progress of his condition is a bit low or slow but do not worry it will improve if maintained good hematological , cardiac and circulatory profile . The daily normal activities will progress at first and he will be able to urinate and defecate alone soon by the help of his special caregiver .
Constipation is a series condition that if not treated properly may cause severe complications so it is fine to use miralax and enemas if needed .
The main goal of treatment depends on his psychological and physical conditions that will need constant encouragement from you to keep his self confidence and the willing to improve . I know it is very hard for you to see your husband in such condition but believe me , your presence will be very supportive more than the caregiver , as he will feel better beside close ones and will try to push himself further to maintain his presence with you.
Physiotherapy will improve his muscle tone and will encourage him to reach the desired levels with the help of a good psychiatrist to withstand stress and depression .
For now i want you t be patient and do not worry some cases improve amazingly even if there was permanent loss , stay with him and give him support .always maintain regular lab check ups to diagnose any minor abnormalities that interfere with his progress .
